The Grand Tour was the traditional holiday of the wealthy during the Art Nouveau era and was an opportunity for young aristocrats to learn more about the histories, art, and cultures of other countries.
The coin is made out of 22k yellow gold and features Arabic inscriptions which sit within an outer border of curling leaf and vine patterns. A small hole was carefully drilled near the top of the coin so it could be strung on a jump ring bale which was then attached to the band of the bracelet. The bracelet itself consists of 18k yellow gold bent and twisted by hand into a repeating filigree pattern.
This bracelet has no clasp and is meant to be worn over the wrist through the gap with the coin dangling against the wrist. A lovely example of Grand Tour jewelry from the Arabic-speaking world, this bracelet would make a valuable addition to any antique jewelry collection. Don't miss your chance to preserve this piece of cultural history. Light patina on the inside of the yellow gold band gives this piece an antique quality which we believe is quite lovely.
This listing is for the item only. This was very true due to the gorgeous designs that came out of this period. This era focused on women and the beauty of nature and the pieces were often large. Enamel was a common material used in Art Nouveau jewelry as the period was more about the importance of the design over the materials used to create it.
The Art Nouveau period happened before the start of the first world war, when mass manufacturing took over the production of many products, including some jewelry. Antique Turkish, Islamic, and Bedouin jewelry all share similar ancestral and stylistic roots and influenced each other through trade for many, many years.
This can largely be attributed to the expansion of the Ottoman Empire, which valued art and craftsmanship and fostered the continuation of Arabic arts and calligraphy. The reign of the Ottomans in the 16th and 17th centuries introduced Turkish designs to Islamic motifs and the nomadic Bedouin culture, melding a range of styles into beautiful arabesques; repeating rhythmic patterns, which often feature geometric floral and organic designs. Coin jewelry has been in existence since coins were invented as a form of national currency.
Many cultures from around the world would make coin jewelry as a means to store or display wealth. Coins also served as a souvenir for travelers to bring home after their excursions, and have made into wearable mementos of their trips, or as symbols of national pride. Filigree metalworking is a delicate form of art and has been found as early as 3,000 BC in Mesopotamia. It was perfected by the Phoenicians and Etruscan civilizations between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC.
It involves stamping out a design in metal and hand bending and twirling threads, combined with tiny beads until a final motif emerges. It is reminiscent of lace and considered one of the most difficult metalworking processes.
Filigree is still a very popular technique in India and Asia. The item "Antique Vintage Nouveau 18k 22k Gold Islamic Arabic Prayer Coin Charm Bracelet" is in sale since Sunday, April 21, 2019.
